Ask
yourself as a leader:
• How many days has my team spent in training, learning
things we could not apply when we came back to work?
• How many times have we sat through classroom training
that bored us to tears?
• How many times this year will my team be Climbing to New
Heights where we need to rely on one another to succeed?
Ask
yourself as a leader:
• How can we learn to work together
by putting the emphasis on fun rather than work?
• How can we learn to trust one another in real life, not
in theory?
• How can we learn to build our skills and collaborate together?
Duck
Sense Climbing to New Heights:
•
teaches teams to collaborate rather
than compete
• teaches teams to rely on one another
• teaches teams to recognize and adapt to different behavioral
styles.
How
the Program Works
• First your team will spend an hour and a half in an informal
classroom setting identifying their DiSC? Behavioral profile.
They will identify their own and other's preferred style of Dominance,
influence, Supportiveness or Conscientiousness. Master Peking
Duck will lead demonstrations of behavioral styles in ways your
team will recognize and never forget.
•
Next your team will train to climb the wall. A professional climb
master will teach your team about the equipment, the knots and
the strategies needed for ascending a 35" high climbing wall.
•
After lunch your team will work together in a practical, hands
on experience to help as many people conquer the wall as possible.
Teamwork, cooperation and encouragement will flow through your
team as they coach, cajole and commiserate over the personal and
technical challenges of wall climbing. For the most highly skilled
there is an opportunity to achieve individual goals in a free
climb session as well as participate in the team event.
•
After all that activity, your team will relax in a casual setting
and enjoy a movie. How casual? Anything from chairs in a circle
to pillows and blankets on the floor. Your team will watch your
choice of a Hollywood favorite that shows people overcoming obstacles
to work effectively together.
•
The day ends with a one-hour workshop to put it all together.
Your team talks through a facilitated conversation to recognize
what they have learned during the day:
•
How do the team's behavioral styles fit together or cause dissension?
•
How does the team work together to accomplish goals?
•
What examples are there of people who stepped forward and surprised
others with their leadership or their skill?
•
When do individuals need to subordinate their own goals to the
goals of the team?
The
Results You Will See:
In
just one day the program sets three agendas for your team to use
as part of their every day interactions:
•
Can I demonstrate or ask for a different behavior in this work
situation?
•
Is everyone focused on their role in this work project, even
if they would rather be the climber than the support team?
•
Is everyone giving 100% to the team or are they working out
for themselves?
At
the end of the day, your team will remember the fun, the challenge
and the satisfaction of learning together and of developing important
relationships through hands on activities and play.
Climbing to New Heights Details:
• Duck Sense Climbing to New Heights can be customized to
fit groups of varied sizes, but works best with 10 to 20 people.
• The program requires an eight-hour day for a group of
ten. An 8:30 am start time and a 5:00 PM finish gives ample climbing
time and discussion time. The schedule can be modified to allow
more time in one of the three activities at the client's request,
or to shorten the day by removing an activity.
• DiSC is administered as a DiSC Classic 2.0 from Inscape
Publishing. Each participant will take the DiSC Classic online
prior to the program date.
• Clothing is very casual. Climbing requires loose clothing
for maximum flexibility. Jeans are not recommended. Shorts are
appropriate in season but climbers should remember that they will
be 30 feet in the air with their teammates watching them from
below. Court or cross training shoes are appropriate. Hiking boots
are a good choice.
• We will make all the arrangements to make sure your team
has a great day, from special foods to equipment and training,
to popcorn and pop for the movie. Just bring your own pillows
and blankies.
• The Duck Sense Team will meet with you to do a gap analysis
of where your team is and where you want it to be so that Duck
Sense Climbing to New Heights is custom tailored to meet your
team's needs. Some common themes are:
•
Assembling New Teams - Develop Team Functions; Define Team Roles;
Determine Team Competencies; Fit Competencies to Roles.
•
Reducing Conflict - Change Views; Discuss Priorities; Reward
Collaboration; Avoid Blame.
•
Clarifying Mission
•
Understanding Relationships
